What is child homelessness?
Did you know that all public school districts are required by the federal McKinney-Vento Act to identify students experiencing homelessness? But what does child homelessness look like?
Often, our culture only depicts one experience of homelessness: living on the streets. Although, this is not the only experience for our students. We can look to the McKinney-Vento Act to shed light on other experiences of homelessness.
Child homelessness looks like:
Staying at a friend or family member’s home
Living in temporary housing such as motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds
Living in emergency or transitional housing
Living in substandard housing
At Avenue of Life, our local public school districts utilize the McKinney-Vento Act to refer students and their families to our Impact KCK program. Through this program, we can provide the support and assistance needed for families to thrive.
